In Nekala, Tampere, we have been building a sun-exposed area network since 2018 for the critically endangered Anacampsis fuscella moth species. We establish novel sun-exposed areas in the vicinity of the existing habitats of the moth. We use the zigzag clover (Trifolium medium), the sole food of the moth’s larvae, to attract them in the new habitats. We both grow zigzag clover seedlings and sow its seeds.
Besides the zigzag clover, we also include other rare plant species of sun-exposed areas in the habitats for the moth. This way, they too get more space to live. In Nekala, some of the new moth habitats are established in cooperation with the students and teachers of the Tampere University Teaching School. The school utilizes the sun-exposed areas in its tuition.
We are building the sun-exposed dry network in Nekala in cooperation with Suomen Yliopistokiinteistöt Oy, Tampereen Tilapalvelyt Oy, and the City of Tampere.
